1 Corinthians 14
1
Follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy.
2
For he that speaks in a tongue speaks not to men, but to God: for no man understands him; However in the spirit he speaks mysteries.
3
But he that prophesies speaks to men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort.
4
He that speaks in a tongue builds up himself; but he that prophesies builds up the (church) community.
5
+ I desire that you all spoke with tongues, but especially that you prophesied: for greater is he that prophesies than he that speaks in tongues, except+ he who interprets, that the (church) community may receive edifying.
6
+ Now, brothers, if I come to you speaking in tongues, what profit will I be to you, unless I will speak to you either by revelation, or by knowledge, or by prophesying, or by teaching?
7
And even things without life that make sounds, whether pipe or harp, unless they make a different sound, how will one know what is piped or harped?
8
For+ if the trumpet makes an unclear sound, who will prepare himself for the battle?
9
As with you, unless you speak clear words by your tongue, how will it be known what is spoken? for you will speak into the air.
10
+ There are, probably, so many kinds of voices in the world, and none of them is without significance+ .
11
Therefore if I don't know the meaning of the voice, to the speaker I will be a foreigner, and the speaker will be a foreigner to me.
12
Even so you, since you are eager for spiritual gifts, seek that you may excel for the edification of the (church) community.
13
So let him that speaks in a tongue pray that he may interpret.
14
For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful.
15
What+ then? I will pray in the spirit, and I will also pray with my mind: I will sing in the spirit, and I will also sing with my mind.
16
Otherwise when you bless in the spirit, how will those in the position of the ungifted say "Amen" to your thanksgiving, since they don't understand what you say?
17
For you truly give thanks well, but the other is not edified.
18
I thank my God, that I speak in tongues more than all of you:
19
Yet in the (church) community I would rather speak five words from my mind, that by my voice I might also teach others, rather than ten thousand words in a tongue.
20
Brothers, don't be children in understanding: However in regards to evil be children, but in understanding be men.
21
In the law it is written, "With foreign tongues and other+ lips will I speak to this people; and even then they will not hear me, says the Lord ".
22
So tongues are+ a sign, not to those who believe, but to those who don't believe: but prophesying doesn't help those who don't believe, but those who believe.
23
If therefore the whole (church) community comes together into one place, and all speak in tongues, and someone unlearnedor unbelieving comes in, won't they say that you are crazy?
24
But if you all prophesy, and an unbeliever, or unlearned one comes in, he is convicted by all, he is examined by all:
25
+ So the secrets of his heart are made known; and falling down on his face he will worship God, and declare that God is truly in you.
26
How is it then, brothers? when you come together, every one of you has a psalm(song), has a doctrine, has a tongue, has a revelation, has an interpretation. Let all things be done to build up.
27
If any man speaks in tongues, let it be two, or three, at most, and taking turns; and let one interpret.
28
But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the (church) community; and let him speak to himself, and to God.
29
+ Let two or three of the prophets speak, and let the others judge.
30
If+ anything is revealed to another nearby, let the first speaker be silent.
31
For you may all prophesy one at a time+ , that all may learn, and all may be comforted.
32
And the prophets' spirits are subject to the prophets.
33
For God is not one of confusion, but of peace, as in all (church) communities of the saints.
34
Let your women keep silent in the (church) communities: for it is not permitted for them to speak; but to be in submission, as the law also says.
35
And if they desire to learn anything, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is shameful for women to speak in the (church) community.
36
+ Did the word of God come+ from you? Or did it come to you only?
37
If any man think himself to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things that I write to you are the commandments of the Lord.
38
But if any man be ignorant, let him be ignorant.
39
So, brothers, desire to prophesy, and don't forbid speaking in tongues.
40
Let all things be done decently and in order.
